legitimate online home business ideas

There are plenty online home business ideas around but why choose an online home business as opposed to a brick and mortar one?

It’s purely a matter of preference. If you enjoy using the Internet and one of your requirements for a business is to be able to do it at any time and from anywhere, then online is the way to go.

Also, the cost of starting an online business is considerably less than a traditional one.

Here are ten legitimate online home business ideas for you to consider.

1. Sponsored Social Media Posts

This involves advertisers posting on your social media profiles to your followers. Obviously, the more followers you have and the more targeted your group of followers are, the more money you are likely to make.

The best site to do this is at www.sponsored tweets.com. If you’re good at social media and you have large following you can make a lot of money.

2. Freelance Services

If you have skills that translate to the online medium then you can offer these to the many people looking to get something done by someone else on the Internet.

You are paid for each job you complete. The amount of money you can make depends on what you can offer, how good you are at it and how available you are.

The following are popular freelance services offered online: graphic artist, writing, web development, SEO services, PPC advertising and being a virtual assistant.

A good site to list your services is www.upwork.com. Also, if you’re considering freelance writing, be sure to check out my article, How to Make Money Writing

3. Ebook Publishing on Kindle

Ever fancied yourself as an author of either fiction or non-fiction? If so you can self-publish your books on the Amazon Kindle platform.

It is important that there’s is a demand for what you’re going to write and that what you write is at a good enough standard for others to purchase. While it’s free to list your book on Amazon, be aware that if you require services to create your book cover and edit your book then there will be costs involved.

The Self-Publishing School offers a great free mini course which will show you how to write, publish and market your first book.

4. Video Business

If you enjoy being on camera then perhaps you’d enjoy starting a video business. This involves creating your own video channel which you monetize. This means you allow advertisers to promote their products and services on your videos.

The more popular your channel is and the more visitors you can attract to your videos, the greater your chances of making a lot of money.

Your channel can be about anything which you are passionate about –  entertainment, music, information, how to, personal development or anything else.

The most popular and biggest platform to upload videos to is www.youtube.com. You can do the same at www.dailymotion.com and as of August 2016, Twitter now also allows you to monetize videos. You can find out more about this by going to the Twitter blog and searching for the article, Twitter monetization, now at your fingertips.

5. Create Online Courses

Do you like teaching others? Then you could consider creating online courses as a business.

Chances are you have skills or knowledge that someone else can benefit from so why not share your expertise and become an online instructor.

You don’t have to create your own website, you can use two training site platforms that do this very well, either at www.skillshare.com or www.udemy.com.

If you’re good and can deliver what people want you can make a lot of money.

6. Start a Podcast

This is like having your own radio show. The place to do this is Itunes. Once again you’ll make money from people who advertise on your podcast. You could also sell your own or affiliate products.

7. Transcription Services

What you will be doing here is transcribing audio files to text.

There are many training providers and businesses that require audio presentations to be typed up as text.

While there are a few transcription services available, one of the best is www.transcribeme.com. Once you sign up you will have to go through their training and pass their exams to be accepted as a transcriptionist.

People doing this make anything from a few dollars up to approximately $US 2000 per month. It will depend on your availability, how good you are at transcribing and how much work they have available at any one time.

8. Create Your Own Etsy Store

This may be an ideal business for you if you are arty and creative and have something you can make to sell on Etsy. Original arts, crafts, clothing, and jewelry are all popular items

9. Network Marketing

Network marketing companies don’t use traditional channels to market and distribute their products. Rather they use people who become members of their company to do this by word of mouth.

You earn commissions from signing people up as distributors and from selling the company’s products.

There are many network marketing companies so it’s important to choose one that aligns with your values and has a product range you want to sell. You can research the best companies to join at www.mlmrankings.com

10. Create Your Own Online Business

While it’s possible to make money with any of the above online home business ideas, there is a common risk with all of them. Your business depends on using a platform that someone else owns and controls.

What this means is that you are at the mercy of their terms and conditions which they can and do change constantly. Consequently, it’s possible they can close your account or membership if you contravene any of their conditions.

It’s also possible that the company can close down completely. This is probably not going to be the case with companies like YouTube and iTunes but smaller companies and in particular network marketing companies are subject to this quite frequently.

So you could have a business today and it could be gone tomorrow for any of the above reasons. It is far safer and a more long term solution to have complete control over your business.

You can do this by creating your own website or blog based on a topic you’re passionate about. Then you create your own content about that subject. When people visit your site and find information and solutions to their problems, you make money when they buy products and services associated with your website.

You don’t have to create any of these yourself. There are already thousands of these available for you to use. This is called affiliate marketing.

The biggest advantage is that you will own your business independently. Your website will be totally unique since no two sites are ever completely the same. Also once you have learned how to do this successfully you can create as many sites as you choose so your business will be fully scalable.

In my opinion, this is the most sensible, long-term online business idea. Because you need to learn how to do this properly I suggest you do this via a reputable online business learning and support platform.

The one I use, which I also believe to be the best is, Wealthy Affiliate. They have in excess of 800 000 members. Surely they can’t all be wrong?

One of the great benefits of being a member is that you can ask the community questions about absolutely anything, at any time of the day or night and people will respond. I asked a question a few minutes ago to demonstrate this – “What are the top three things you like about Wealthy Affiliate?” If you click on the question you’ll be able to read the responses.

What I also like is that you can get started for free to check it all out to see if it’s right for you. If you want to know more about what’s involved, you can read my article, Get Started
